Located in Kensington, London, the Victoria and Albert Museum (commonly known as the V&A) was founded in 1852 and named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. It is one of the world’s largest museums dedicated to decorative arts and design. Originally established as the “Museum of Manufactures” and later the “Museum of Ornamental Art,” its creation was inspired by the success of the Great Exhibition of 1851. The current Renaissance-style building was completed in 1909. The museum’s V&A Café, opened in 1868, holds the distinction of being the world’s first museum café. It features three historic rooms—Gamble, Poynter, and Morris—renowned for their stunning Victorian décor, including intricate tiles, stained glass, and ornate ceilings. Visitors can enjoy a self-service selection of sandwiches, soups, pastries, and freshly baked scones, along with tea and coffee.
