22nd Nov 2021: Rainbow Bridge from Hilton Tokyo Odaiba

Image
The Rainbow Bridge is a 798-meter-long suspension bridge connecting Shibaura in Minato City, Tokyo, to Odaiba. Its official name is the "Tokyo Port Connecting Bridge," but it has become widely known as the "Rainbow Bridge" due to its beautiful nighttime illumination. The bridge opened in 1993 and has since become a beloved landmark of Tokyo. The bridge features a two-tiered structure. The upper deck is used by the Shuto Expressway Route 11, while the lower deck accommodates a general road, the Yurikamome automated transit system, and a pedestrian walkway. Pedestrians can cross the bridge using the "Rainbow Promenade," a dedicated walkway. There are two routes: the south side offers views of Odaiba’s coastline, Mount Fuji, and Tokyo Bay, while the north side provides a stunning panorama of Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree, and the city skyline. The walk across the bridge takes approximately 30 minutes one way. The Rainbow Bridge is illuminated at...

10th April 2021: The Azaleas in Heisei Tsutsuji Park

Image
Every April, the azaleas in Heisei Tsutsuji Park, located just outside the north exit of Nerima Station, reach their peak bloom.  I took these photos with an iPhone which is not a current model; while it couldn’t produce the beautiful "Bokeh" you’d expect from a DSLR, the images still turned out quite nicely. I now understand why compact digital cameras have lost their appeal. 27th Mar 2021: My Little Photographer

Image
My journey with photography began at the age of eight, when my grandfather gave me an Olympus Pen D. I took it along on a school excursion and captured my first photos—and I’ve been photographing ever since, for nearly half a century. Perhaps inspired by watching me, my daughter expressed a desire to take photos when she was seven. We gave her my wife’s old E-PL1 and since then, we’ve occasionally gone out together to take pictures. The cherry blossom photos I’ve uploaded this time were all taken by my daughter. I taught her the basics, like camera settings and how to use the electronic viewfinder, but when it came to composition, I simply told her to shoot whatever she liked. Maybe I’m just a doting parent, but I think her sense of framing is quite impressive—she’s already a fine little photographer in her own right. As her father, my biggest concern is how long she’ll keep wanting to go out and shoot with me. The cherry blossom photos I’ve uploaded this time were all taken by her. I ...

27th Sep 2020: Istanbul Turkey

Image
During the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Japanese government eased its ban on overseas travel on the condition of mandatory quarantine upon return. Taking advantage of this, I made a short business trip to the United Kingdom and Turkey.  I didn’t have much opportunity to take photos in the UK, but I managed to capture a few in Istanbul, Turkey. It was my first time visiting the city. Until then, my only impression of Istanbul came from the old hit song by Mayumi Shōno, ‘Tonde Istanbul.’ Because the lyrics mention deserts and mirages,  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9gPz6FXwaU I had imagined a dry, Egypt-like landscape—but the reality was completely different. Istanbul is Turkey’s largest city and one of the most unique in the world, as it spans two continents—Europe and Asia—divided by the Bosphorus Strait. For centuries, it has thrived as a crossroads of civilizations, blending diverse histories, cultures, and religions. Founded as Byzantium in the 7th century BC, it became...

14th Mar 2020: Time to say good-by to Mexico

Image
In March 2020, when it was decided that we would return to Japan from Mexico, we took a family trip to Cancún as a way to conclude our time in Mexico. We had visited Cancún the previous year as well, so this was our second trip there.  We stayed at an all-inclusive hotel, enjoyed plenty of delicious food, and spent relaxing days on the beach. Simply gazing at the emerald-green sea and the pristine white sand was enough to soothe our hearts.
