6th Aug 2023: Kew Gardens in Summer

Image
Situated in Richmond, southwest London, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kew Gardens is at its most vibrant during the summer season. The Rose Garden, wildflower meadows, and the Waterlily House are in full bloom, while the glasshouses offer stunning displays of tropical plants and water lilies. Visitors can also enjoy the Treetop Walkway, Badger Sett, and Log Trail—unique experiences that allow you to explore the treetops and woodland paths in the pleasant summer climate. The weather is generally comfortable, with long daylight hours that make early morning or late afternoon walks particularly enjoyable. During summer, opening hours are slightly extended. I was a member with an annual pass, but purchasing tickets online is very convenient; of course, tickets can also be bought at the entrance.  As school holidays and weekends tend to be crowded, visiting early on a weekday is ideal for avoiding the crowds and capturing beautiful photographs. The gardens are highly accessible, ens...

28th May 2023: Big Ben

Image
Big Ben is a clock tower located in London, England, and is officially known as the "Elizabeth Tower." The name "Big Ben" originally referred to the large bell inside the tower, but over time, it became associated with the entire tower. The Elizabeth Tower was completed in 1859. It was designed by William A. Banks, and the clock and bell were constructed by George Elliott.  The tower was originally constructed as part of the British Houses of Parliament and was completed during the reign of Queen Victoria. The large bell, known as Big Ben, weighs around 13 tons and produces a powerful sound, making it widely recognized as a symbol of London. The tower itself stands at about 96 meters tall, and at its top, there are four large clock faces. Each clock face has a diameter of about 7 meters, and the clocks are known for their intricate design and precision. Today, Big Ben is one of the most iconic tourist destinations in London, attracting many visitors from around th...

28th May 2023: Buckingham Palace and Victoria Memorial in London

Image
Buckingham Palace is the official royal residence located in the heart of London, and it has served as the monarch’s principal home since Queen Victoria’s accession in 1837. Originally built in the early 18th century as “Buckingham House,” it underwent extensive renovations during the reign of George IV, resulting in the magnificent structure we see today. The palace contains 775 rooms and hosts state banquets, official ceremonies, and royal events, making it one of London’s most iconic landmarks. Directly in front of the palace stands the Victoria Memorial, a striking white marble monument completed in 1911 to honor Queen Victoria’s reign. At its summit gleams a gilded statue of the Winged Victory, while below are sculptures symbolizing Charity, Truth, and Courage. Surrounding fountains and ornate figures create a majestic setting that complements the grandeur of the palace. This forecourt serves as the stage for the world-famous Changing of the Guard and other royal ceremonies, attra...

29th Apr 2023: Yellow Flower fields

Image
Every morning on my way to work, I passed a beautiful flower field. I often parked my car there and took a few photos. At the time, the only lens I had was a 24mm, which wasn’t wide enough for a full panoramic shot, but I still managed to capture the vast expanse of yellow flowers stretching as far as the eye could see. 22nd Apr 2023: Cherry blossoms in London.

Image
During my first spring after moving to London, I was captivated by the beautiful cherry blossoms blooming in front of the church near my home. Spring in London is a season when cherry blossoms bring vibrant color to the city.  The peak viewing period is from mid-March to late April, though some varieties can be enjoyed until early May. You’ll find delicate blossoms reminiscent of Japan’s Somei Yoshino as well as lush, layered petals like those of Yaezakura, creating a rich and varied display over several weeks. Unlike Japan’s traditional hanami culture, the common way to appreciate cherry blossoms here is through quiet walks. The sight of these blossoms harmonizing with historic architecture and verdant parks offers rare moments of serenity in the heart of the city. In springtime London, even a simple stroll through the neighborhood can lift your spirits and make the day feel brighter.
