5th May 2026: Tokorozawa Sakura Town in Saitama

Tokorozawa Sakura Town

We visited Tokorozawa Sakura Town as a family, a cultural complex centered around the Kadokawa Musashino Museum. It has become a new landmark where visitors can explore an inspiring blend of anime, literature, and art across multiple disciplines.

One of the main attractions is the large‑scale immersive event “Galaxy Express 999 The Galaxy Experience - That Journey Is Still Continuing” currently held in the Grand Gallery on the first floor.

The event is based on Galaxy Express 999, a beloved 1979 animated film directed by Rintaro and written by Reiji Matsumoto. This anime was one of my favorites when I was still in elementary school. The theme song was sung by Godiego, a very popular band at the time, and I used to play the song on the electronic organ. Set in a distant future where humans can replace their bodies with mechanical ones, the story follows a young boy named Tetsurō who dreams of obtaining a mechanical body to escape poverty and hardship. Guided by the mysterious and elegant Maetel, he boards the interstellar train “Galaxy Express 999” and travels from planet to planet, encountering both the beauty and the darkness of the universe while learning what it truly means to be human.

Rather than simply watching the film, the exhibition has been reimagined so that visitors can experience the story within a three‑dimensional space. Guests step into the role of fellow “passengers,” journeying through the galaxy alongside Tetsurō and Maetel.

With 32 4K laser projectors illuminating a vast 1,000‑square‑meter venue and a fully immersive surround‑sound system, the installation creates the sensation of being transported directly into outer space.
Another highlight not to be missed is the “Bookshelf Theater” on the fourth floor. This extraordinary 360‑degree space is surrounded by towering eight‑meter‑high bookshelves, where projection mapping brings the world of books to life through light and sound. The visuals interact seamlessly with the shelves, creating a magical atmosphere in which stories seem to rise and unfold from the books themselves.

Immersing yourself in a cosmic journey through Galaxy Express 999 and experiencing the “universe of books” through projection mapping—Tokorozawa Sakura Town is truly a place where the world of storytelling can be felt with your whole being.
