Lotus and Light: The Quiet Beauty of Saraswati Temple in Bali - 16th - 20th Aug 2004

The Saraswati Temple

It was designed in the 1950s by the celebrated Balinese architect I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, commissioned by the Ubud royal family, and dedicated to Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, art, and wisdom.

The temple’s signature feature is its expansive lotus pond, which stretches along both sides of the walkway. When the lotus flowers are in full bloom, they create a peaceful and enchanting scene.

At the back of the temple stands the main shrine, decorated with finely detailed stone carvings that showcase the beauty of traditional Balinese craftsmanship. In the evenings, visitors can sometimes enjoy traditional dance performances, adding a magical touch to the experience.

Although it sits in the middle of Ubud, the temple feels calm and removed from the noise of the town—truly deserving of the name “water palace.” Its style is quite different from temples in Japan, offering a wonderful opportunity to feel the essence of Indonesian culture.
