28th Dec 2007: Oahu Hawaii

Oahu

Oahu is the cultural and economic heart of Hawaii, where urban life and natural beauty coexist in a uniquely harmonious way. Home to Honolulu and Waikiki, the island offers a vibrant blend of diverse cultures and modern cityscapes alongside lush mountains and pristine beaches.

Along the island’s eastern coastline, visitors are greeted by striking scenery—turquoise waters set against steep, rugged cliffs—creating a landscape rich in geological variety.

One of the most iconic sights in this area is Rabbit Island, also known as Manana Island, located just offshore near Makapuʻu Point. Formed by ancient volcanic activity, it is classified as a tuff cone and rises about 110 meters above sea level. Today, the island serves as a protected seabird sanctuary, and landing is prohibited. Its rounded shape, which resembles the back of a rabbit, is the origin of its popular nickname.

The eastern shore of Oahu is marked by visible traces of volcanic history, where dark lava formations meet the vivid emerald ocean. Around Makapuʻu, dramatic lava cliffs stand beside exceptionally clear waters, making it a popular place to experience the island’s volcanic geology up close. This rugged natural beauty contrasts sharply with the urban atmosphere of Waikiki, and the ability to encounter such different landscapes within a short distance is one of Oahu’s most captivating qualities.

At the time, film photography was still my mainstream, so all of the photos I uploaded were originally taken on film and recently scanned. More than eighteen years have passed since they were shot, and some had noticeably faded, but I applied corrections and digitized them to restore their appearance.
