3rd May 2006: Kamikochi in Nagano
Kamikochi is one of Japan’s most renowned mountain resort areas, and its iconic landmarks—Myojin Pond and Kappa Bridge—epitomize the region’s natural beauty and spiritual significance. This harmonious blend of nature and faith leaves a lasting impression on all who visit.
Located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, Kamikochi sits at an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters within a highland basin. Surrounded by the majestic Hotaka mountain range, Mount Yake, and the crystal-clear Azusa River, it forms the heart of the Chūbu-Sangaku National Park.
At the center of Kamikochi stands Kappa Bridge, a symbolic wooden suspension bridge spanning the Azusa River with the Hotaka peaks as its dramatic backdrop. It is the most popular gathering spot for visitors and a beloved photo location.
About an hour’s walk from Kappa Bridge lies Myojin Pond, a tranquil body of water considered sacred as part of the grounds of Hotaka Shrine’s inner sanctuary. Nestled at the foot of Mount Myojin, the pond reflects the surrounding mountains like a mirror, enveloping visitors in a serene and reverent atmosphere.
To preserve its pristine environment, Kamikōchi enforces year-round restrictions on private vehicles. This ensures the quiet and purity of the air remain undisturbed. From the spring opening festival to the vibrant autumn foliage, Kamikōchi offers breathtaking scenery throughout the seasons—making it an ideal destination for those seeking a deeper connection with nature.
This time, all photographs were taken on color film, but due to severe fading, I was only able to restore them in black and white. I regret not digitizing them sooner.
