1st Aug 2007: The Ahwahnee in Yosemite California

The Ahwahnee

The Ahwahnee, located in Yosemite National Park, is a luxurious mountain lodge built in the 1920s, distinguished by its grand design that exemplifies National Park architectural style. Its stone exterior and interior supported by massive wooden beams were crafted to harmonize with the surrounding natural landscape.

Inside, features such as the large fireplaces and the high‑ceilinged dining room create an atmosphere of warmth and elegance for all who visit. Situated on the eastern side of Yosemite Valley, the hotel offers breathtaking views of iconic landmarks such as Half Dome and Yosemite Falls from its grounds. As a lodging facility, The Ahwahnee provides comfortable guest rooms with beautiful mountain views, and its restaurant serves classic American cuisine.

The location is extremely convenient—Yosemite Falls is within walking distance, and popular destinations such as El Capitan and Vernal Fall are easily accessible. Renowned as a unique place where history, culture, and natural beauty come together, The Ahwahnee allows guests to fully immerse themselves in the richness of Yosemite. Staying there feels as though one becomes a small part of the hotel’s long and storied legacy.

In addition to the main building, the hotel offers a total of 24 cottage rooms arranged in eight single‑story buildings located in a separate, more secluded area. Built in 1928, these historic cottages are surrounded by pine forests, providing a quieter and more private atmosphere than the main lodge. Having stayed in both the main building and the cottages, I find each has its own distinct charm, and I can wholeheartedly recommend both experiences.

I first visited the hotel alone in 2001, and since 2007, my spouse and I have returned several times. Next time, I hope to visit with our daughter and enjoy the experience as a family.
