In spring, Nogi Shrine is a quiet and elegant place where one can appreciate a gentle sense of the season despite its location in the heart of the city. As you step onto the grounds, soft spring sunlight, cherry blossoms, and fresh green leaves welcome you, surrounding you with a bright atmosphere that leaves no trace of winter behind. 

Dedicated to General Nogi and his wife, the shrine values dignified calmness over showy splendor, and the arrival of spring naturally brings a sense of balance and clarity to the mind. Walking slowly along the approach path, the sound of birdsong and branches swaying in the breeze is soothing to the ears, allowing you to put a little distance between yourself and the busyness of everyday life. 

As spring marks the beginning of new chapters and fresh challenges, Nogi Shrine can be said to be a fitting place to quietly reaffirm one’s resolve and reset the heart.

There’s a Starbucks in Rancho Palos Verdes (Los Angeles, CA) that I will never forget. Nestled right in front of the vast Pacific Ocean, it offers a breathtaking view that makes every sip of coffee feel like a moment of peace.  What made it truly special were the evenings—watching the sun slowly sink into the horizon, painting the ocean in shades of crimson and gold. I remember sitting there, completely immersed in the beauty, feeling time gently slow down. It’s been nearly twenty years since that visit, but the memory remains vivid in my heart. Truth be told, I’m a devoted cat lover. Even now, a Persian cat graces our home with quiet companionship. But today, I’d like to share the story of a Norwegian Forest Cat who crossed the Rainbow Bridge in the summer of 2015—a soul so dear, our family will carry her memory for a lifetime. Back when we lived in Los Angeles, a stray cat named Sammy wandered into our lives and became our beloved “lodger cat(イソウロウねこ).” Around that time, Olympus had a photo-sharing site called Fotopus, where I posted countless pictures of Sammy under the title The Lodger Cat (イソウロウねこ) , using the nickname Dararin Darling(だらりんダーリン). Eventually, Sammy became a formal member of our family. When we moved back to Japan, she came with us.
