15th July 2019: The Church of San Francisco Acatepec in Puebla, Mexico

Puebla is located about 130 kilometers southeast of Mexico City and is renowned for its stunning colonial architecture and rich culinary traditions. Founded by the Spanish in 1531, its historic center has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is adorned with vibrant Talavera pottery, which adds a distinctive beauty to the decoration of churches and buildings.

Historically, Puebla is known for the Battle of Puebla in 1862, when Mexican forces successfully repelled the French army. This victory is commemorated annually on May 5th with the Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Today, Puebla has also grown into a major industrial city, home to one of Volkswagen’s largest manufacturing plants.

In the nearby town of Cholula, the Church of San Francisco Acatepec stands out as a 16th-century Baroque masterpiece. Its exterior is richly decorated with colorful Talavera tiles, and its yellow façade gleams brilliantly under the Mexican sun, making it a striking sight even from afar. The interior is lavishly adorned with golden ornaments and sculptures, showcasing an opulent fusion of Spanish architectural style and indigenous Mexican artistry. 

The contrast between the vivid yellow walls and the deep blue Mexican sky was truly breathtaking.

There’s a Starbucks in Rancho Palos Verdes (Los Angeles, CA) that I will never forget. Nestled right in front of the vast Pacific Ocean, it offers a breathtaking view that makes every sip of coffee feel like a moment of peace.  What made it truly special were the evenings—watching the sun slowly sink into the horizon, painting the ocean in shades of crimson and gold. I remember sitting there, completely immersed in the beauty, feeling time gently slow down. It’s been nearly twenty years since that visit, but the memory remains vivid in my heart. Among all the Starbucks I’ve ever been to, this one stands above the rest. Mitarai Keikoku located in Tenkawa Village, Nara Prefecture, is a nature-rich valley that becomes beautifully adorned with vibrant autumn foliage each year.  The best time to view the fall colors is typically from early to mid-November. During this season, the emerald-green streams, cascading waterfalls of various sizes, and the vivid reds and yellows of the trees create a truly breathtaking landscape. Well-maintained walking trails and suspension bridges allow visitors to enjoy the harmony of waterfalls and autumn leaves as they stroll through the gorge. In particular, the view from the suspension bridge—looking down at the waterfall framed by colorful foliage—and the reflections of the leaves on the crystal-clear water are especially popular among photography enthusiasts.
