17th July 2019: The Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City

The Metropolitan Cathedral, located in the heart of Mexico City, is a Catholic cathedral and one of the largest in the Americas. Its monumental structure measures approximately 59 meters in width, 128 meters in length, and 67 meters in height, featuring two bell towers, a central dome, sixteen chapels, and a sacristy.

Construction began in 1573 and took nearly 250 years to complete. This extended building period resulted in a unique design that blends multiple architectural styles, including Renaissance, Baroque, Churrigueresque, and Neoclassical. Inside, the cathedral boasts lavish altars, the most notable being the “Altar of the Kings,” adorned with gold and so ornate that it is often called the “Golden Cave.”

The cathedral was built on the site of the former Templo Mayor following Spain’s conquest of the Aztec Empire, symbolizing the power of the colonial era. In 1987, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its fusion of Aztec and Spanish colonial culture, its role as a model of urban planning, and its status as a masterpiece of religious architecture.

Far more than a place of worship, the Metropolitan Cathedral stands as a profound symbol of Mexico’s history, culture, and faith. There’s a Starbucks in Rancho Palos Verdes (Los Angeles, CA) that I will never forget. Nestled right in front of the vast Pacific Ocean, it offers a breathtaking view that makes every sip of coffee feel like a moment of peace.  What made it truly special were the evenings—watching the sun slowly sink into the horizon, painting the ocean in shades of crimson and gold. I remember sitting there, completely immersed in the beauty, feeling time gently slow down. It’s been nearly twenty years since that visit, but the memory remains vivid in my heart. Mitarai Keikoku located in Tenkawa Village, Nara Prefecture, is a nature-rich valley that becomes beautifully adorned with vibrant autumn foliage each year.  The best time to view the fall colors is typically from early to mid-November. During this season, the emerald-green streams, cascading waterfalls of various sizes, and the vivid reds and yellows of the trees create a truly breathtaking landscape. Well-maintained walking trails and suspension bridges allow visitors to enjoy the harmony of waterfalls and autumn leaves as they stroll through the gorge. In particular, the view from the suspension bridge—looking down at the waterfall framed by colorful foliage—and the reflections of the leaves on the crystal-clear water are especially popular among photography enthusiasts.
