The double‑flowered cherry blossoms
From February through April, around one hundred cherry trees representing some twenty varieties bloom in succession throughout the grounds. By early to mid‑April, the double‑flowered varieties—such as the elegant Yaebenishidare—reach their peak. Set against the backdrop of the three‑storied pagoda or the quiet Yusui Pond, the clusters of deep pink blossoms hang softly and create a refined, distinctive beauty that blends seamlessly with the garden’s calm ambiance.
Unlike the fleeting nature of the Somei‑Yoshino (Prunus × yedoensis), yaezakura (double‑flowered cherry blossoms) have a longer blooming period, allowing visitors to enjoy them at a more leisurely pace. As the final chapter of spring, these blossoms leave a lasting impression on all who stroll through Chinzanso’s peaceful landscape.
The double‑flowered cherry blossoms at Chinzanso are especially captivating because their luxurious, layered petals can be appreciated within the garden’s lush, tranquil greenery. These blossoms, known as yaezakura, feature ten or more overlapping petals and bloom later than the pale Somei‑Yoshino, marking the graceful finale of spring. Their fullness and depth harmonize beautifully with the serene atmosphere of Chinzanso’s historic garden.
