13th April 2024: The English bluebell in London
During my years living in London, bluebells would bloom in our garden every spring. These photographs capture the charm of those delicate flowers.
The English bluebell, Hyacinthoides non‑scripta, is a wildflower that symbolizes the arrival of spring in the UK. Blooming from April to May, it carpets the floors of ancient woodlands in shades of deep blue and violet. Its slender leaves and gracefully arching stems bear bell-shaped flowers that droop to one side, with petals that curl softly at the tips.
Their cool blue‑purple hues and gentle fragrance lend a quiet, almost mystical atmosphere to the springtime forest. The UK is home to roughly half of the world’s native bluebells, and the sight of them spreading across woodlands that have existed for over four centuries is truly breathtaking.
Long associated with folklore as flowers of the fairy woods, they hold a cherished place in British cultural history.
