Oishi Park: Lavender Fields by Lake Kawaguchi - 13th July 2011

Located along the shores of Lake Kawaguchi in Yamanashi Prefecture, Oishi Park is renowned as a scenic destination where seasonal flowers bloom in vibrant profusion against the majestic backdrop of Mount Fuji.

Among these, the lavender that blossoms from early to mid-summer stands as a symbol of the park itself, offering visitors a soothing blend of fragrance and color. Typically reaching peak bloom from late June to mid-July, the sight of purple blossoms lining the lakeside is reminiscent of a painting. On clear days, Mount Fuji emerges in striking clarity beyond the lavender fields, and its reflection may even grace the surface of the lake.

During this period, the “Kawaguchiko Herb Festival” is held, with Oishi Park serving as one of its main venues. The festival draws crowds with its array of lavender-themed crafts and aromatic goods, stalls featuring local specialties, and sweet treats such as lavender-flavored soft-serve ice cream.

For photography enthusiasts, the classic composition features lavender in the foreground with Mount Fuji rising beyond. By using a telephoto lens to compress the distance between the flowers and the mountain, one can achieve a more dramatic and visually compelling image. On calm mornings, there is a chance to capture Mount Fuji reflected in the lake—a perfect moment for a dreamlike shot.

When I visited, the weather was clear and intensely hot, with sweat pouring down, yet unfortunately, clouds obscured Mount Fuji and the lavender was sparse, making it difficult to capture the scene as I had envisioned. I hope to return and try again when the conditions are more favorable.
