29th Oct 2025: Chopin A Symbol of Polish Patriotism and Love for the Homeland
Warsaw, the capital of Poland, is a city steeped in history and culture, renowned for its deep connection with Chopin. Frédéric Chopin was born in Poland in 1810 and spent his formative years in Warsaw, where he received his musical education and composed his early works. Today, the city honors his legacy through the Chopin Museum, commemorative monuments, and summer open-air concerts. In the heart of Warsaw, along Krakowskie Przedmieście Street, stands the Holy Cross Church, which holds Chopin’s heart—a poignant symbol of his love for his homeland. Visiting Warsaw feels like being embraced by the melodies of Chopin.
Chopin died in Paris in 1849, leaving a wish that his heart be returned to Poland. His sister Ludwika preserved it in brandy (or cognac) and secretly brought it home. Initially placed in the church’s crypt in the 1860s, it was later moved to a pillar in 1879 or 1880, enclosed in a crystal urn inscribed with the Latin phrase: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). During World War II, the Nazis seized it, but it was safeguarded by local resistance and clergy, then restored to the church on October 17, 1945. In 2014, experts conducted a discreet non-invasive inspection, confirming its excellent condition. Today, the site remains a place of quiet prayer for worshippers and Chopin admirers alike.
As my daughter is learning piano, I hope that one day our family can return to this remarkable place.
