2nd Jan 2026: Asmui (Daisekirinzan) in Okinawa

Asmui Daisekirinzan

Okinawa’s northernmost region, Kunigami Village, is home to Asmui (formerly known as Daisekirinzan), a remarkable site where visitors can walk through the world’s northernmost tropical karst landscape. This terrain was created over more than 200 million years as ancient limestone was gradually shaped by wind and rain.

Following a major renewal in late 2024, the area was reintroduced as “Asmui Hikes,” offering an even richer experience of exploring dramatic rock formations and subtropical forests while immersing oneself in Ryukyuan mythology and traditional spiritual culture.

The site is revered as the first land created by the deity Amamikyu, and its sacred atmosphere is heightened by the presence of massive banyan trees and striking geological formations. Several hiking routes are available, each allowing visitors to enjoy unique combinations of rock scenery, forest paths, and sweeping views, making the area accessible even for families with children. The adjoining Stone Culture Museum provides insights into the region’s geological history, deepening one’s understanding before or after the hike.

Asmui offers a rare opportunity to experience the seamless blend of nature, culture, and mythology that defines northern Okinawa.

I first visited this place about fourteen years ago. Since then, thanks to my connection with Mr. Kise, who was serving as the director of the place at the time, my family has returned almost every year to offer our gratitude after our daughter was born.

I have a profound admiration for Mr. Kise — for the way he devoted his entire life to protecting this sacred land and nurturing the development of Daisekirinzan as its director. His dedication and spirit move me deeply.

Although Mr. Kise has since stepped down from his position and begun a new path as an independent spiritual guide for Asmui, we were fortunate to join one of his guided experiences together as a family on this visit. It was a profoundly moving and cleansing experience—one that we will carry with us for a long time.
