White Blooms Against the California Sky: The Charm of Potato Vine in Los Angeles CA - 16th April 2010

White Blooms Against the California Sky

Solanum jasminoides, commonly known as the potato vine, is an evergreen climbing plant in the nightshade family and is widely appreciated in warm regions such as Los Angeles. Its five‑petaled flowers, ranging from pure white to soft lavender, bloom in star‑shaped clusters, with bright yellow stamens that add a vivid touch at the center. The rounded buds, tinged with pale purple, create a beautiful contrast with the open blossoms.

Because it is highly tolerant of dry conditions and thrives in full sun, the plant is exceptionally well suited to California’s climate, where it can be seen adorning fences, walls, and garden trellises throughout the year.

Although its fragrance is subtle, the plant’s light and graceful appearance lends a gentle charm to the landscape. Resembling the flowers of potatoes or eggplants—both members of the same family—its delicate clusters and climbing habit make it a popular choice for ornamental planting.

I still remember how beautifully the pure white flowers stood out against the deep, cloudless blue sky of California.

  1. 所変われば品変わる、ですね。
    ツルハナナス と検索で出て来ました。
    LA の青い空に白い花弁が映えて夏気分満杯ですね。

    Different places, different customs(/plants), right?
I found this by searching for "Solanum jasminoides."
The white petals stand out beautifully against the blue sky of LA, giving off a full summer vibe.

    1. そうです、ツルハナナスです。ちなみにアメリカではpotato vineと呼ばれていて色々な場所で見る事ができました。純白な花びらと黄色のしべがかわいらしい花で、LAの青い空にとてもよく映えて綺麗でした。

Yes, it is Tsuru-hananasu. In the United States it is commonly called a “potato vine,” and I was able to see it in various places there. It is a charming flower, with pure white petals and bright yellow stamens, and it looked particularly beautiful against the blue skies of Los Angeles.
