Kamikochi Revisited Twenty Years Later (Part 1/7) - 9th -12th Aug 2026: Whispers of the Azusa River

We visited Kamikochi for the first time in 20 years. blessed with fine weather throughout our stay, our family fully enjoyed the grand beauty of nature.

Azusa River is a crystal-clear stream that symbolizes Kamikochi, one of Nagano Prefecture’s most famous scenic destinations. Originating from Mount Yari (3,180 meters) in the Northern Alps, it flows gently through the Kamikochi Basin.

The river is best known for its astonishing transparency and its striking waters, which shine in shades of emerald green and cobalt blue. Fed by melting snow and frigid spring water from the surrounding mountains, the river remains icy cold to the touch even in the height of summer. Visitors are constantly captivated by the sight of white gravel shimmering beneath the clear water.

Enhancing the beauty of the Azusa River are the riverside walking paths and the iconic wooden suspension bridge, Kappa Bridge (Kappabashi). Standing on the bridge offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the grand Hotaka Mountain Range and the active volcano Mount Yakedake reflected on the water's surface. The river presents a vibrant display through every season: fresh foliage in spring, lush greenery in summer, and the brilliant golden leaves of Japanese larch trees in autumn.

As the lifeblood supporting Kamikochi’s ecosystem, the Azusa River seamlessly connects the majestic Northern Alps with the tranquil forests. Its gentle flow and the soothing sound of its waters remain essential elements that highlight the serene beauty and wonder of this mountain resort.
