A Peaceful Escape Across the Thames: St Thomas' Hospital Gardens - 28 May 2023

Shortly after I began my new life in the UK, I visited London to photograph Big Ben at sunset. It was during that visit that I discovered St Thomas' Hospital Gardens, located directly opposite Big Ben across the River Thames.

The gardens were beautifully maintained, with a wide variety of flowers in bloom. The view of Big Ben from the park was also truly stunning. Patients from the hospital could be seen spending time there, reading books and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. Despite being situated in the heart of one of the world's most famous tourist destinations, the gardens had a remarkably calm and relaxing atmosphere.

If you are visiting Big Ben or the London Eye, I highly recommend taking some time to explore these beautiful gardens as well.

    St Thomas と聞くと Sonny Rollins の有名な曲が思い浮かびます。
    子供の頃に母親から聴かされたヴァージン諸島の子守歌がベースとされています。
    さて、
    ７枚目（最後のコマ）、絶妙な色目が目を惹きます。
    固定クレーンでしょうか、太陽で消す辺り、確かな腕前を感じます。

    The name "St. Thomas" brings to mind the famous song by Sonny Rollins.
    It is based on a Virgin Islands lullaby that his mother used to sing to him when he was a child.
    By the way,
    The seventh photo (the last frame) catches the eye with its exquisite coloring.
    It looks like a fixed crane; the way it seems to vanish into the sun reveals the photographer's genuine skill.

      Sonny Rollins… 渋いですね。７枚目は夕陽が落ちていく中、何種類もの違う露出で撮影したものの中の１枚です。クレーンは本当に邪魔で興ざめだと思い、おっしゃる通り太陽で消そうと思いました。露出を上げると簡単に消えるのですが、それではこの色合いが出ない、露出を下げると消えない、そんな葛藤の中、妥協したのがこの１枚です。

      Sonny Rollins... very cool choice. The seventh photo is one frame from a series I shot at sunset, experimenting with several different exposures.

      The crane really bothered me too, and I thought it spoiled the mood of the scene. Just as you suggested, I hoped the sun would effectively hide it. The problem was that when I increased the exposure enough to make the crane disappear, I lost the rich colors I wanted. When I reduced the exposure to keep those colors, the crane became visible again.

      After wrestling with that dilemma, this was the image I eventually decided to live with.

Standen House and Garden, located in East Grinstead, West Sussex, is a late 19th-century country house managed by the National Trust. It was built between 1892 and 1894 as a summer retreat for the wealthy Beale family. Designed by Philip Webb—an architect and close friend of William Morris—the house is characterized by its warm, welcoming exterior crafted from local sandstone and brick.
